PlayOn’s newest feature, PlayCast, Expands PC Browser-To-TV Casting Capabilities to Roku, Xbox360 and Chromecast

September 20, 2012 – New York, NY – Pepcom Holiday Spectacular. PlayOn, the media server software from MediaMall Technologies that streams online videos to TVs and mobile devices, today announced it will be adding Chromecast to its list of supported streaming devices and unveiled PlayCast, a PlayOn feature that offers a Chromecast-like browser video projection experience for customers who use Roku, Xbox 360 and even Chromecast itself.
PlayOn's support for Chromecast will bring more than 60 additional channels, including Hulu, HBO GO, CBS and NBC, to Chromecast’s current offering of four: YouTube, Google Play, Netflix and the Chrome Internet browser. Users will also be able to stream their personal videos and media files from their PC to their TV via Chromecast using PlayOn’s free MyMedia channel. To use PlayOn with Chromecast, once Chromecast releases its official SDK, you will need to download PlayOn to a PC and get the PlayOn app on your mobile device. Then, you will be able to use your mobile device as a TV remote control and channel guide to browse or search for content and then play your selected TV show or movie on a Chromecast-connected TV. The app will allow you to pause, seek, and control the volume of your Chromecast-connected TV.
PlayOn's latest feature, PlayCast, acts as an enhanced, high-quality browser-casting solution for Chromecast*, Roku and Xbox 360 users. PlayCast has a lower CPU requirement, uses less power, and optimizes for quality, reducing play lag and jittery streaming when compared to Chromecast’s native tab projection feature. When casting online video from a PC browser to a TV, PlayCast eliminates the browser background and gives viewers a full-screen video experience. While Chromecast only supports tab projection from Chrome, PlayOn users can cast videos from the browser of their choice, including Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Opera.
"We want to give our users options. PlayOn's support for Chromecast and our new PlayCast feature will offer more viewing options, greater reliability and an enhanced user experience. Instead of being restricted to one type of streaming device and one type of browser, we designed PlayCast to work with a variety of the most popular streaming devices, including Chromecast, and several types of Internet browsers," said Jeff Lawrence, CEO, MediaMall Technologies. "Same goes for PlayOn's support for Chromecast. We want users to be able to access all of their favorite online channels on their Chromecast, with as few restrictions or obstacles as possible."
PlayCast will be available for new and existing PlayOn customers. PlayOn is available in monthly ($6.99/month), annual ($29.99/year) and lifetime ($59.99) subscriptions. PlayCast is projected to be available in October and PlayOn support for Chromecast will be released once Google releases the official Chromecast SDK.
PlayOn will be demoing PlayCast and PlayOn’s Chromecast app on September 19 (tonight) at the 2013 Pepcom Holiday Spectacular show. For more information about PlayCast and PlayOn visit http://www.playon.tv/playcast or download the media kit at www.playon.tv/press_kit.
*PlayOn and PlayCast support for Chromecast will not be available until Google releases the official SDK for Chromecast. All demos and features are based on the currently published preview SDK.
